Balance for Better: Cartus Celebrates International Women’s Day
Posted by: Amy Meichner, Senior Vice President, Human Resources
Tomorrow marks International Women’s Day (IWD), a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements while also calling for gender equality. This year’s theme is “Think Equal, Build Smart, Innovate for Change”, focusing on innovative ways to advance gender equality and the empowerment of women.
The day has been observed since the early 1900s when a group of around 15,000 women marched through New York City demanding voting rights, better pay, and shorter working hours. A year later, the first National Woman’s Day was celebrated in the U.S., and today it is recognized around the world and formally recognized by the United Nations, marked with events like rallies, networking sessions, conferences, and arts performances.
Celebrating Women in the Realogy Family
Realogy and its family of well-known industry brands are well represented by women in senior and executive positions. For instance, our President and CEO, Katrina Helmkamp, was appointed by Realogy last year and became the first female leader of Cartus’ Executive Leadership Team.
Katrina says of International Women’s Day, “To me, it’s a day where women and girls can reflect on yesterday’s achievements and tomorrow’s ambitions. At Cartus, we value the equal contribution made by both women and men to meet our company goals. We place great emphasis on creating an inclusive culture and I’m particularly proud of our diversity.”
For my own part, I am honored to serve as the executive sponsor of the Cartus Global Diversity and Inclusion Council, which supports the creation of an inclusive environment across our global offices. I am so energized to work with our employees around the globe every day on diversity-related initiatives, and to encourage employees to learn more about each other.
Swanepoel Power 200 List
We also recently blogged about the Swanepoel Power 200 (an annual list of the most influential people in U.S. real estate), which ranked a number of women from Realogy companies. The Top 20 Women Executives list acknowledges women leaders in the residential real estate brokerage industry.
This list includes Sherry Chris, President and CEO of Better Homes & Gardens Real Estate, who is one of the highest-profile franchise CEOs in the property industry, and Pamela Liebman, President and CEO of The Corcoran Group, which has more than 2,200 agents in 25 offices. Also listed is Kate Rossi, EVP, NRT; Sue Yannaccone, Regional EVP, NRT; and Kathy Korte, EVP, NRT.
Coldwell Banker’s Women in Leadership Initiative
We were excited to see our sister company, Coldwell Banker, recently launch a Women in Leadership Series which gives a voice to the female leaders in their network through monthly calls, blogs, and podcasts. This follows its Coldwell Banker Examining Women and Leadership Survey, which found that over a third (34%) of Americans working in female-dominated industries agree that women face a ‘glass ceiling’, preventing them from reaching high-level positions. As part of the initiative – which aims to ‘demolish the glass ceiling’ – the organization will also be holding a Coldwell Banker Women in Leadership Month in May. I look forward to following Coldwell Banker’s Women in Leadership initiative throughout the year.
