Ice Cream: Sweetening Any Relocation Experience
This Sunday is National Ice Cream Day, so celebrate with a bowl, cone or cup filled with your favorite flavor. If you’ve just relocated to a new destination, ice cream can also help to alleviate stress and provide comfort. Indeed, settling into a new location can be a rocky road, which is why it’s so important for international assignees to establish normalcy and comfort where they can… and if that means tucking into a favorite dessert, then so be it. Moreover, if they're relocating to a hot climate, it’s a tasty way to keep cool!
Comfort in New Surroundings
Every day at Cartus, we move people to locations around the world and we strive to make their relocation experience as comfortable and welcoming as possible. It can be the little things that really make a settling-in process successful. Having something familiar and as simple as ice cream for example, can ease some of the stress of a move, even if just for a brief moment. Of course, ensuring the organization fully supports the assignee and their family on arrival, is also vital to a positive relocation experience. Depending on the location, you may want to provide them with a car and driver for the first few weeks for example, to allow them to get used to the local area and road conditions. Or perhaps offer language training. Even a few basic words and phrases can go a long way to help someone complete errands like setting up a bank account or shopping. Tasks that will help the relocating family settle into their new home quicker.
Thousands of years ago, those in the Persian Empire would place snow into a bowl and cover it with grape juice as a treat to keep cool. Fast forward to today, and ice cream can be just as effective in helping to keep assignees cool in hot climates when they aren’t used to them. Summer months in particularly hot locations can come as a bit of a surprise to assignees on their first visit. Indeed, in Middle Eastern countries for example, temperatures can be as high as 118F, with humidity reaching between 85 percent and 95 percent. Such conditions can be quite uncomfortable in the heat of the day, especially when trying to complete tasks such as finding a property or school (no matter how much ice cream you eat!). With this in mind, we recommend that companies consider scheduling any first visits or permanent moves to such locations, outside the hottest months of the year.
Despite the potential challenges, relocation can be a wonderful, enriching experience. Eating ice cream to provide comfort during the settling-in process, is just the cherry on top.
Enjoy National Ice Cream Day by sharing some with your family and friends!
